Findings from the First Half of 2026
H1-2026: The New Normal in Cybercrime
The first half of 2026 shows a further professionalization of attackers: Ransomware and data theft are merging into the new standard, with both occurring in combination in nearly three-quarters of all documented cases. Double extortion is no longer an isolated phenomenon, but rather an established business model. Particularly striking: Over 20 different ransomware groups were active, led by Qilin and Akira, which together account for just under half of all ransomware incidents. No sector was spared—from industrial facilities to medical supply stores to local government, and from opera festivals to law firms. State-sponsored attacks also reached the highest political levels in Germany: an ongoing Signal phishing campaign targeted federal ministers, diplomats, and journalists.

Key Findings from H1-2026
The OOPS H1 2026 Report analyzes 184 real-world security incidents and identifies recurring patterns: a lack of network segmentation, insufficient monitoring of outbound data flows, unprotected credentials, and the absence of robust emergency response processes. It is becoming increasingly common for attackers to move undetected within systems for weeks before striking. Data exfiltration in the range of hundreds of gigabytes to terabytes is no longer a rarity. The report provides specific recommendations for action for each case: ranging from continuous SOC monitoring and vulnerability analyses to endpoint protection, zero-trust architectures, and structured incident response plans. In this way, the OOPS H1-2026 Report helps decision-makers make informed risk assessments and strategically enhance their security architecture.
